Biography

Chris Schiller was born and raised in Oregon, the son of a forester.  His childhood in Oregon fostered both an affection for trees and a desire for exploration of contrasting landscapes.

Chris has been photographing the American West for over 20 years.  He seeks out places and views rarely or never photographed before. Frequently, his images are made far from any road – places that can only be reached on foot with a backpack full of cameras and lenses.  He uses his camera as another way to explore the places he visits, bringing his images a sense of discovery and delight.

Ansel Adams once said: “Both the grand and the intimate aspects of nature can be revealed in the expressive photograph. Both can stir enduring affirmations and discoveries, and can surely help the spectator in his search for identification with the vast world of natural beauty and the wonder surrounding him.”  This sentiment is the heart of Chris’ photographic journey.

Chris lives with his wife Bethany in Northern California.

This is commonly the space where the photographer is shown smiling with a piece of photographic equipment, ready to capture the next image.  Since Chris strives for an unconventional view in his photographs, it is fitting that a biographical image of Chris also be unconventional.  Chris' photography is informed by a diversity of passions and interests, including music.  Photo by M.
